One Little Word
Last year, I began a tradition of choosing a word for the year rather than creating a list of lofty goals and resolutions. As a goal-oriented, type-A achiever (read control freak), this was a big step! I like nothing more than setting my sites on something, getting after it and crossing things off my list. As I’ve reflected on my default propensity, I realized that there is very little that is organic or spiritual about my old ways of getting things done. My yearly goals were just another attempt for me to define and create for myself- rather than surrender, consult, and trust God with my life.
It turns out that God doesn’t need my controlling hand to bring about change in my life. He needs my surrender. You see, there’s something strategic about our lives. We are here for a reason and have been created for a purpose.
And the good news is that when we work with God, He will get us where we need to be.
By choosing a word that represents what you most hope God will do in you, and focusing on it for an entire year- we position ourselves in God’s able hands. And here’s the BEST part: it is God’s commitment and passion to make us what he declared us to be when He dreamed us up. In every situation and relationship of our lives, God is utilizing people, places and things as His transformative tools. He does not rest. He does not abandon the work He has started within us, and He does not get tired or frustrated with our progress.
He relentlessly works to change us into all that His grace makes possible for us to become.
All this Truth brings me to WHY one little word in 2019 can make a difference. Change in 2019 is possible, “not because we have wisdom and strength, but because we have been blessed with the grace of Jesus.” (Paul David Tripp)
The whole process of selecting a word for the year invites God into our planning process, and allows Him to form our character at a deep, sustainable level. I promise that growth and change will result, and next year, at about this time, you will see how God has been faithful and how He has used the circumstances of your life to manifest the very thing you hoped for.
My word for 2018 was align. My hope was that the desires of my heart would align with God. That my job, livelihood and the way that I spend my time would be hemmed tighter to His plans for me. And most importantly, that I would become closer to Him.
The Lord not only gave me the desires of my heart, but He sprinkled some great lessons in along the way too. I learned that in order for me to be more aligned with God, I have to accept necessary endings: children growing, friends leaving (relationally and physically), jobs concluding, grief and sorrow lifting, and grudges dissipating. It was a season of winter, “short days and long nights, of gray and white and cold” that has illuminated hopeful lessons of beginnings.
And now, I’m preparing for a season of spring in my life- much like the way I am preparing for 2019. The new is coming. A season of waiting and endings has become a starting place; a place to plant seeds to bring to fruition what is ready to be born- but only when they are ready.
What seeds should I plant in 2019, and what does the Lord say about them? Do I trust Him to sprout, water and nourish these seeds? Can I surrender to the Master Gardener and become comfortable with His timing? Can I let go, lean in and come to know Him as the Keeper of my dreams?
Dream with the Lord about what you can co-create in this season, and HERE’S HOW:
